Joining UNC Shotokan

Joining Club Shotokan at UNC is a relatively simple process - just show up and start learning! If you want to continue practice, however, there are just a couple of things to consider. One of them is the uniform you will wear at practice. The other is the question of dues.

Uniform

The traditional uniform for karate practice is called a gi (pronounced "GEE," with a short "g"). These are available through Sensei for a discount price. Students who already own a karate gi from previous practice may wear it.

Dues

Dues for UNC Shotokan are $40 per semester for UNC students and $50 per semester for non-students. Dues for the club average to about $8 or $10 per month. This is a sharp contrast to other clubs, where instructors as qualified as our own normally charge upwards of $100 per month. Since our Sensei does not wish compensation for his teaching, the dues are used for club activities, trips, and dinners.Quite often, members find that they receive the entirety of their $40-$50 payment in the form of dinners and trips that the club pays for.
